Frequently Asked Questions

Can furniture be kept outside all year round?
Kewdos products are weather resistant and designed for outdoor and indoor use, however, it is obviously beneficial to store the furniture indoors during the winter months. Winter storage will reduce maintenance and extend the life of your furniture Although not recommended you can leave the furniture out all year round. In the case of the latter it is a necessary precaution that the cleaned table top surface is sealed with an impregnating porous stone sealer at the end of the summer season . The sealers are available from tile suppliers and usually used for bathroom floor and walls which have natural stone i.e. slate ,travertine etc.

How easy is Kewdos Furniture to assemble?
Kewdos furniture is supplied either fully assembled or flat-packed. The Flat Packed items have been designed to be constructed with the minimum of effort and also disassembled at the end of the season where storage space is limited.

It should be noted that in construction the procedure is to leave all screws and nuts as loose as possible until all screws are in place and then tighten evenly and systematically. If this procedure is not followed the last screws to be inserted may not be in line with their intended location. In the interest of safety Kewdos furniture is built to close engineering tolerances thus the need to leave all parts of loose at the initial stages of assembly.

What is FSC?
FSC stands for Forestry Stewartship Council which overseas the worlds wood resources. This organisation issues certificates to countries which it knows to have sustainable sources and this follows through to the export of the timber and products.

My furniture is cracking or is cracked. Why and what can be done?
All wood losses moisture through evaporation during which cracks may appear at the edges or ends of chairs or tables . Usually these are quite tiny and referred to as ‘shakers’ and occasionally can be wide especially in hot weather. These opening will close during damp cooler conditions and usually only occur at the early stages of outdoor use and do not deteriorate further. The integrity , durability and stability of the furniture is not affected in any way. Application of a light covering of Tung or Danish oil will provide additional protection during very hot seasons.

The wood is going black. What can I do?
Atmospheric dirt, organic matter from plants and trees and /or over use of oil based wood treatment products promote fungal growth which can present itself in several colours but usually black. The use of soap and water with a non metallic brush to remove the mould or in severe cases the use of sand paper will remove the problem. The wood should be allowed to dry for several days before a light application of oil.

There are pits, blemishes and small cracks in the stone. Are these faults?
Natural stone has all of these features including the appearance of small cracks which are called fissures. In general some manufacturers fill and polished these areas to establish a flat surface or embellishment of the product. Blemishes and colour variations are as presented by nature and do not constitute a fault. Travertine is a porous material which could be stained or affected by acidic household detergents, wines, perfumes etc. The spillages should be cleaned from the surface as soon as possible. The surface is protected during manufacture with an impregnating sealer and it is strongly recommended that such a sealer be reapplied at the start of the summer season and prior to winter.
